History of the library
Upon receiving all the necessary documentation for the construction of the new building and following the approved project of September 2, 1983, the new part of the Library was built, which today, together with the old building, represents an inseparable whole.
The library was founded on March 25, 1945 by a decision of the City People's Board with the name: City People's Library in Bitola.
The library changed several rooms. It was located in this order:
- in the premises of the former "Tourist" hotel, opposite the current Cultural Center;
- in the building of the Primary School "Kliment Ohridski", today the Primary School "Goce Delchev";
- in the premises of the former "Royal" restaurant, at 80 Marshal Tito Street;
- in the building of the former Pioneer Home (until 1954);
- in the building at 89 Marshal Tito Street (1954 – 1974);
- since 1974 in the building of the adapted surgical ward of the old Bitola hospital and
- Since 1982, the library has been expanding into a newly built, modern space located at 39 Leninova Street.
Since its establishment until today, the Library has undergone several status changes in its operations and a change in the name under which it operated:
- City Public Library – Bitola (1945 – 1947);
- House of Culture (1947 – 1952);
- City Library (1952 – 1960);
- Main Library (1960 – 1964);
- "Kliment Ohridski" Main Library – Bitola (1964 – 1980);
- "Kliment Ohridski" National and University Library – Bitola (1980 – 1995);
- Main and University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" – Bitola (1995 – 2004) and
- National Institution – University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" – Bitola (from 2004 to present).
The national institution - University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" - Bitola is a modern cultural institution with a book collection of around 600,000 books and numerous magazines, with a tendency for permanent increase.
Today, the Library strives to become a true virtual library, to reach an increasingly higher level of satisfaction of the scientific, research and educational needs of the end user, without him having to worry about where and how the requested information came from, which is only possible with the further development of modern automated library operations.
The program of the National Institution - University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" - Bitola is based on realistic and achievable parameters.
